Red Cross, Area Leaders Address Drowning 'Crisis' High Temperatures, Humidity Could Be Reason For Increase Leaders from across the Tri-state met Monday to address the region's increase in drowning deaths and near-drownings, which they said had reached a "crisis" stage. Various public safety, health care and American Red Cross officials have teamed up with pool and spa businesses to highlight pool safety. According to the Hebron Fire Department, the recent stretch of high temperatures and high humidity could be the reason for the sudden increase. Officials cautioned parents and caregivers to never leave children unattended and to always carry a phone with them near water, so they can call for help if necessary. Two people per household should also have CPR training, officials said, and children should take swimming lessons. All pools should be enclosed with fences that have self-closing gates, officials said.
