Safety Tips for the Holiday Season:

 1) When you leave home, make it appear occupied. Lights on timers, a radio or television should be left on. Use your home alarm system.  It’s useless if you don’t use it.

 2) When you go shopping and you make a trip back out to your car with plans to go back inside, move your car to another parking space.  This will give the appearance you have left.  If you only place the packages in your car and walk away, someone watching may have observed you.  Now your packages are vulnerable.

 3) Give your self-extra time in traveling.  Roads will become congested and backed up. Allow yourself extra time so that you are not rushed.  Having the extra time will allow you to focus on driving and possible avoid an accident.  Remember the time has changed and it gets dark early.

 4) Use a designated driver if alcohol is involved in your holiday cheer.

 5) If your son or daughter is babysitting for someone away from your home, make arrangements for their transportation home afterwards.  Do not rely on the parents of those they babysat for if they were consuming alcohol.

 6) Report suspicious activity to authorities.

Traffic:
Speed limits for the City of Villa Hills are Buttermilk Pike (35 mph), Collins Road (40 mph) and Amsterdam Road (35 mph). All other streets are 20 mph or as posted. There will be no parking within thirty feet of any intersection, no parking within twenty feet of any fire plug, no parking within five feet of any private driveway, no parking in a designated bus stop. The ordinance prohibiting parking of vehicles facing the wrong direction is strictly enforced by the Villa Hills Police Department. There is no parking on the cul-de-sac streets. The City has an ordinance prohibiting the parking on City streets during a SNOW EMERGENCY. The Mayor may declare a snow emergency any time in which he determines that snow or ice has created a risk on the streets of Villa Hills. Signs are posted at the entrances to the City of Villa Hills.

Crime Prevention Tip:

A home invasion is when robbers force their way into an occupied home, apartment or hotel room to commit a robbery or other crimes. Home invasion is like the residential form of an automobile carjacking and it’s on the rise.

The home invader will sometimes target the resident as well as the dwelling. The selection process may include a woman living alone, a wealthy senior citizen or a known drug dealer. The greatest violence usually occurs during the initial sixty seconds of the confrontation and home invaders often come prepared with handcuffs, rope, duct tape, and firearms.

The same tactics used to prevent daytime burglaries will go a long way to preventing forced entry home robberies.

Remember these important security steps:
- Install solid core doors, heavy duty locks, and window security devices
- Lock all doors, windows, and garages at all times
- Use the door peephole BEFORE opening the door
- Use your porch light to help you to see clearly outside
- Never rely on a chain-latch as a barrier to partially open the door
- Never open the door to strangers or solicitors
- Hold a family meeting to discuss home security plans.
